How Teams Qualify for Olympic Cricket at LA28
Six places per event, most of them decided by a ranking table on 31 December 2026 — and one of cricket’s great powers cannot enter at all.
Cricket returns to the Olympics at Los Angeles 2028, 128 years after its only previous appearance. Just six teams take part in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments — a very small field for a sport with more than a hundred member nations — and the route in is unlike anything else on the Olympic programme. Most of it is settled not by a tournament but by a ranking table on a fixed date.
The shape of the tournament

- Squads of 15 players.
- 28 matches in total across both events, all at a purpose-built venue in Pomona.
- Two groups of three. Each team plays its group once, then two further matches against teams from the other group that finished in a different position; the top two contest gold and silver, the next two play for bronze.
- Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania are each guaranteed representation.
Five places are decided without a tournament
Five of the six places in each event come from a combination of existing ICC events and the T20I world rankings, under the sport’s already published structure. There is no single Olympic qualifying competition for them.
On the women’s side, four are already filled. Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa qualified through the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 as the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa respectively, capped at one per continent.
The men’s places work off the same principle: the highest-ranked eligible team from each of Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania on the T20I rankings as they stand on 31 December 2026.
The hosts are not automatic
The United States qualify as hosts only if they appear in the top 15 of the relevant T20I rankings at any point between 30 June and 31 December 2026. It is a condition, not a guarantee, and a home Olympic cricket tournament without a home team is a genuine possibility.
If the USA miss it, the place does not vanish. For the men, it passes to the next highest-ranked nation from any continent not already qualified by 31 December 2026. For the women, it goes to the highest-placed non-qualified nation in the rankings as of 1 March 2027.
The sixth place: the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027
The final berth in each event is decided at a new ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027, an eight-team competition per event. The eight are the highest-ranked teams not already through. Dates and a host nation have not yet been announced.
Why the West Indies cannot enter
The West Indies are one of cricket’s foundational powers, and they will not be at the Olympics. The reason is structural rather than sporting: the West Indies are a composite ICC member representing multiple Caribbean nations, and they are not an IOC National Olympic Committee. The Olympics admit NOCs. There is no NOC called the West Indies.
Caribbean cricketers can still reach Los Angeles, but under an individual national flag. If the West Indies men’s or women’s team ranks among the eight highest not-yet-qualified sides on 31 December 2026, a dedicated Caribbean Qualifier determines which single NOC — Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana each have one — represents the region at the Olympics Qualifier.
Why the end of 2026 matters more than 2027
Ranking cutoffs make poor television. There is no stadium, no trophy and no moment — just a table on a date. But the 31 December 2026 cutoff will decide more Olympic cricket places than the 2027 qualifier will, and every T20 international played between now and then feeds into it.
